ABOUT BUDDHA RETREATS
It was love at first sight when Lisa was researching venues in 2017. Buddha Retreats in the countryside just north of Lisbon had beautiful, delicious and nutritious food. Character. That Portuguese faded elegance. A tower! A story. Green hills for walks and runs. Sweet owners and staff. Happy cats and dogs. Flowers. Orange trees and fig trees. A sense of safety and cocooning. A pool. It was just the right size, and with just the right values. We've kept coming back and now this place feels like a second home.
The whole place is ours for each springtime yoga teacher training in Portugal (April every year). That means we can teach in the indoor yoga shala, on the terrace, on the outdoor yoga deck, by the pool, in the dining room – you name it, we've rolled out mats there. You can expect to be outside whenever the weather allows for it, but also to cozy up by a fire. The bedrooms are shared or singles – all unique – and most have shared bathrooms. You won't spend much time in your bedroom (really just your sleep).
The location is about one hour north of Lisbon and its airport. Right outside the door there are plenty of trails and country roads to explore. About 10 minutes away is Obidos, a little town with a medieval wall surrounding it, and 20 minutes west is the Atlantic ocean. For self study days, some students choose to take a little field trip, while others just enjoy the stillness of the retreat venue and its immediate surroundings.
We firmly believe that a safe, pleasant venue greatly enhances the experience of an intensive yoga teacher training. Nutritious and healthy food, being cared for and a feeling of simplicity – in tune with nature – are also details that we find important to the process of cocooning yourself for 3 weeks.

I think this venue is magical. Its isolation really allows you to tune inward and check out of anything you choose to leave outside its walls. It's a big space which gives lots of options for privacy or community. The hills are also just amazing.

The venue has many different spots, so everyone can find a place of his/her own. The surrounding nature is beautiful. The little paths between the houses and spaces at Buddha Retreats are nice and calming.
